Shipwreck at the Skeleton Coast

Skeleton Coast

Rugged Atlantic coastline, dense fog and mysterious shipwrecks: Skeleton Coast National Park is one of the wildest and most remote regions in Namibia. Here, the Namib Desert meets the ocean, creating a unique and almost surreal landscape.

Skeleton Coast National Park stretches along the remote northwestern coastline of Namibia and is one of the most untouched and pristine regions on the continent. The name “Skeleton Coast” originates from the many shipwrecks scattered along the shore, as well as from the bones of stranded whales and seals that were once commonly found here.

The region is characterised by barren desert landscapes that abruptly meet the cold Atlantic Ocean. Dense coastal fog regularly creates a mystical atmosphere and plays a crucial role in the fragile ecosystem.

Due to its remoteness and harsh conditions, large parts of the park are only accessible with a special permit or as part of guided tours. This very inaccessibility is what makes the Skeleton Coast one of the most fascinating destinations for true explorers.

Wildlife in Skeleton Coast National Park

Skeleton Coast National Park may appear inhospitable at first glance, yet many animal species have adapted to the extreme conditions. Along the coastline, large seal colonies can be found, while desert-adapted animals such as oryx antelopes and jackals inhabit the inland areas.

With a bit of luck, desert lions can occasionally be spotted, perfectly adapted to the harsh environment. Hyenas, elephants and various bird species are also found in this region.

The coastal fog plays a crucial role in the survival of many animals, as it provides an important source of moisture.
