Etosha National Park is one of Namibia’s most well-known protected areas and ranks among the largest national parks in Africa. At its centre lies the vast Etosha Pan, a nearly completely dried-out salt flat that stretches across thousands of square kilometres and gives the park its unique character.

Surrounding the pan are open grasslands, bushveld and scattered mopane woodlands. This diversity of habitats attracts a large number of wildlife, which tends to gather around natural and man-made waterholes. Especially during the dry season, impressive scenes unfold as animals drink side by side.

Etosha is also ideal for self-drive safaris, as the road network is well developed and many camps offer waterholes that allow for wildlife viewing even at night.

Wildlife in Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is known for its exceptional wildlife viewing, especially around the waterholes. During the dry season, large herds of elephants, zebras and springboks gather, while oryx antelopes and giraffes move across the open plains.

Etosha is one of the best places in Africa to see black rhinos. Lions are also frequently spotted, often near waterholes where they wait for prey. Leopards and cheetahs are present as well, although sightings are less common.

In addition to large mammals, Etosha offers impressive birdlife, especially during the rainy season, when flamingos and other waterbirds occasionally populate the pan.
